Alright, gotta make another entry... Right, well I'll talk about some songs I've heard by Tohoshinki/TVQX, of all things.
I haven't listened to too many of their songs, and I haven't gone out of my way to look for any, either. I first heard of them in the anime
One Piece, in which they performed the 17th (and second to last) ending theme,
Asu wa Kuru Kara. I think it's a rather gorgeous song, and it ranks among one of the best ending themes
One Piece had to offer, which saddened me when Toei stopped using ending themes altogether in favor of opening themes that were way too long. The song is used during a good portion of the Enies Lobby arc, which is considered to be one of One Piece's best, most emotionally powerful arcs; the ending video sequence tugs at your heartstrings if you understand the context. I didn't think ADVENTURE WORLD after that was a great way to end the string of ending themes, but otherwise, it turned out to be one of my favorite songs from the anime.
Around the time I remember
icysnowdrop mentioning TVXQ in her LJ, a new opening was on air, which turned out to be a remix of
We Are!. I was surprised to see that TVXQ was brought back to do the theme, though it wouldn't have been the first instance of a returning music artist. Unfortunately... well, I think the song sucks ass. Okay, I'm a big fan of the original We Are! by Hiroshi Kitadani, and it's not only my favorite
One Piece song, but it's also my most favorite song of all time. It's a pretty meaningful song to me, and it's always been my number one, so I'm probably strongly biased here. But I'm mostly judging the song on its own merits, and I don't really like how TVXQ went about handling the song. While the original used orchestral instrumentals, this new version uses completely synthesized music, and I think it sounds awful. I wasn't expecting an exact copy, but I would have at least liked for them to use real instrumentals instead. I think the singing is really bad, especially in the second half of the full version. Ironically, listening to the song in higher quality made me think it sounded even worse, because the background synthesizing goes out of control about halfway through.
Moving on, there came
Share The World afterwards. I don't really know what to think about this song; it's a lot better than that sorry excuse of a remix, but other than the chorus, I don't really care for the rest of the song. I think it's tolerable, but mostly unmemorable. At this point, I've been feeling like a lot of
One Piece's recent openings (not just the ones by TVXQ) haven't been really as good as the anime's past songs. I really enjoyed every opening song from We Are! to BRAND NEW WORLD, but beginning with Crazy Rainbow, things haven't been quite as good. I think Jungle P is okay, but still not near the awesomesauce of the original six opening themes. And since Toei has completely ditched the ending themes, I really miss them, since a lot of the ending theme songs were fantastic. They seem to be pretty popular among
One Piece listeners, but I don't think TVXQ's recent songs are what I'm really looking for in a new opening song.
Lastly, Josephine showed me a song by ravex called
Just the Two of Us feat. Tohoshinki, which is part of a collaboration album between the Avex Group music label and Tezuka Productions. I've heard of the album before, but only through the 18-minute promotional anime featuring a new Astro Boy character, Ratom (which I will
bitch talk about in a later entry), and since I'm an Astro Boy fan, naturally I wanted to check it out. I actually really enjoyed this song, though TVXQ only lends their singing talents to the song, and they didn't make it themselves, so in truth, it's not really a TVXQ song. Regardless, I feel like this is the kind of sound that I initially expected out of them after hearing Asu wa Kuru Kara, since the singing verses are pretty good and rather passionate.
Soooooo, since only one out of three TVXQ songs in
One Piece has been able to impress me, I doubt I'll be going out of my way to look for more of their stuff. I liked their little gig with ravex, though - so I guess TVXQ is at their best when their songs sound more emotional? Hmm. I'd really like to hear them make something more akin to Just the Two of Us; it doesn't sound too far from something they'd make.
